Volunteering After 60: Put Your Experience To Good Use

After 60, you have something valuable to offer: a lifetime of experience, a few practical skills, and probably a sense of humor that has survived quite a bit. Volunteering gives you a place to share all three while meeting people and doing something meaningful.

You don’t have to commit every Tuesday for the rest of your life. Start with a single event or a short shift and see what feels right.

1. Help At A Theater, Museum, Or Festival

Welcome visitors, take tickets, or assist at community events. If you enjoy the arts, this is a chance to spend time around people who share your interests. Ask about volunteer orientation and the time you’ll spend standing.

2. Spend Time With Animals

Shelters and rescue organizations may need help with everything from walking dogs to laundry, adoption events, and office tasks. Choose a role that fits your comfort level. Enthusiasm counts, but you don’t have to wrestle a Labrador to make a difference.

3. Share A Skill Or Mentor Someone

Help a student practice reading, assist an adult learning English, or offer career guidance through an organized program. Sales, budgeting, gardening, sewing, computer skills—something that feels ordinary to you could be enormously useful to someone else.

4. Pitch In Outdoors

Look for community gardens, trail projects, park cleanups, or wildlife monitoring programs. Ask about the terrain and physical demands before signing up. There may be planting, recordkeeping, or visitor assistance roles alongside the heavier work.

5. Help Neighbors Get What They Need

Volunteer through a food pantry, meal program, or community organization. Packing groceries, making friendly calls, and helping with deliveries are practical ways to contribute. Sometimes a warm welcome matters as much as the task itself.

6. Volunteer Abroad. Whether You’re A Well Seasoned Explorer Or A First Time Traveler

Volunteering abroad with International Volunteer HQ provides a meaningful and rewarding way to experience a new country and culture. As an older volunteer, you can make a real difference on IVHQ’s volunteer projects by bringing with you life experience, wisdom and skills that are really valued by the local community. Before choosing, ask: What will I do? What training is provided? How much time is expected? Are there any costs or physical requirements?

Find something you care about and give it a try. You may arrive hoping to help—and leave with a new friend, a good story, and a reason to come back.
